# Peoples of Avarun: Origins, Appearance, Specialties, and Living Histories

**Status: Author-approved setting edition · 30 October 2026.** This establishes the common names and described *tendencies* of six present-day Oravel lineages and their learned specialty traditions, plus the existing history of True Dragons and conscious Changed beings. Not every person has the proposed trait; historical mechanisms, divine genealogy, other continents' ancestry rosters, heredity and lifespan remain unresolved. The ancestral umbrella categories are not nations, castes, IQ tiers, or fixed citizen classes.

## Principles of interpretation

- Ancestry does not determine political citizenship, moral worth, intelligence, empathy, entitlement to magic or divine lineage.
- Each listed advantage is an observed tendency in some individuals, a learned craft, or an explicitly uncertain historical account. None is a race-wide character statistic or a guaranteed trait.
- Every Accord uses existing compatible traces, alignment, vessels and cost; ancestry does not create free energy. No race has exclusive magic spells.
- Drawing panels represent one fictional Willowbank example per community, not a biological standard or a tool for identifying a real person's ancestry.
- Census uses a voluntary mutually exclusive primary self-description for counting; mixed families may opt for any applicable category; dragons and speaking changed beings are not automatically included in the current town denominator.

**Universal Remanence:** Approved laws in `world/Remanence_and_Leaves.md` and `world/lore/Arts_of_Accord_APPROVED_ORAVEL.md` supersede any local claims. No race is automatically stronger in raw magic or has unique access to a spell. An advantageous sense may help a practitioner align an already compatible imprint, and training may make a community known for one craft, but wear, fatigue, environment, consent and release still constrain all work.

**No inherited IQ/EQ rankings:** Intelligence, memory, practical judgment and emotional skill differ among individuals and educational settings. A school or community may cultivate strong reasoning, empathy, conflict mediation or long-term planning, but these are not biological species stats. Distinguish physical acuity, cultural training, technical certification and unverified myth.

## Chronology and ancestry without false certainty

- **Before c.5000 BS (Unreckoned Dawn):** Humanity's oldest beginning and the origins of other living bodies are not reconstructed. A popular love story uses the names Vaen and Ilyra, not verified creator names.
- **c.5000–2501 BS (Crowned Wings):** Dragons govern human populations in ancient polities and receive worship. Their powers in specific inscriptions may be exaggerated, but their political role and reverence are established.
- **c.2500–1801 BS (Veiled Centuries):** Dragon civilizations suffer devastating wars; surviving reports speak of True Dragons unable to reproduce. No confirmed present survivor or shapeshifting return.
- **c.1800–1 BS:** Human institutional ascendancy and the Athanor Reckoning. No modern human is collectively guilty of the old captivity project.
- **Sundering boundary:** Land splits and bodies change. Remanence spreads as traces, vessels, beings and effects. Modern named lineages may have arisen, converged or been renamed through different routes; no detailed one-race-one-curse formula is proven.
- **1–118 AS (Twin Lanterns):** Survivor migrations, shared relief kitchens and new ways of speaking about ancestry; the two moons do not establish lineage supremacy.
- **119 AS and later (Missing Light):** Lunar interpretations proliferate; race histories must not be rewritten as if worship proved blood origin.
- **Current era:** Riverleague, Karstholds, Veldren, Saelic Free Cities and Thornward contain overlapping families. Willowbank's `9,600` census is a town planning model and is contested, not an atlas-wide race percentage.

## The six present-day lineages and living studies

### 1. Humans — The many paths

**Status and origin:** pre-Sundering ancestry. Humans are recorded during the Age of Crowned Wings under dragon polities and later among Meridian Dominion states. Many were victims and opponents of the Athanor project; neither participation nor blame is inherited. **What remains uncertain:** recorded pre-Sundering existence; earliest emergence unknown.

**Representative face sketch:** `assets/peoples/human.webp`. No single human face: varied complexions, facial structures, hair textures and body types across all five continents. The portrait is one Willowbank traveller, not a standard. Portraits are illustrative single people, not a test of who belongs.

**Recorded history:** Post-Sundering human families migrated across the new seas and many changed through local conditions without forming a uniform people.

**Body and advantage:** Broad variation, no signature inherited magical organ and no single shared bodily advantage. Adaptation through flexible apprenticeship, cross-disciplinary trade and a large network of widely exchanged methods. This is a social and educational advantage often available to humans, not guaranteed greater IQ, EQ or faster evolution.

**Accord specialty:** **Accord sequencing.** Pattern-Weaving: human-led river and city guilds are famous for combining modest compatible Accord procedures in reliable sequences. This is taught craft, not innate multipurpose spell power. **Limit / counterplay:** Every step still needs a compatible trace, vessel and cost; no human can will a fragment to do anything.

**IQ / learning:** Varied capacities; multilingual market mathematics and pragmatic negotiation are learned through schools and work rather than inherited intelligence.

**EQ / cooperation:** Hearth-and-Threshold hospitality trains de-escalation and social coalition building in some towns, while other human institutions exploit outsiders.

**Everyday life:** Ferries, crowns, home kitchens, archives, itinerant teaching and the many post-Sundering languages.

**Competing local testimony:** “A human archive says every newcomer is a guest; an excluded mixed family replies that being greeted is not being counted.” This is an original fictional perspective, not a documentary quotation.

### 2. Nerathi — Those who read the current

**Status and origin:** post-Sundering associated lineage. The oldest surviving marsh and coast accounts describe families transformed or newly recognized as Nerathi during early post-Sundering migration. The specific curse or imprint behind webbing has not been isolated; some families claim a much older water-kin heritage. **What remains uncertain:** early AS lineage evidence and shared river-family memory; precise transformation mechanism disputed.

**Representative face sketch:** `assets/peoples/nerathi.webp`. Some have fine membrane folds between fingers or toes, water-shedding hair and narrow ear contours; plenty look indistinguishable from other Riverleague people. Skin and eye coloration vary. Portraits are illustrative single people, not a test of who belongs.

**Recorded history:** River pilots, teachers, accountants and inland artisans formed kin and contract networks long before modern Riverleague charter laws.

**Body and advantage:** Some families inherit flexible finger or toe webbing and a stronger dive reflex. They must still breathe air and can drown. Extended salt exposure may damage sensitive skin. Enhanced leverage when swimming, and for some individuals fine tactile detection of directional current against hands and feet. Not underwater breathing, water control or limitless endurance.

**Accord specialty:** **Water-alignment reading.** Current-Laying: trained practitioners use water motion as an environmental alignment cue for navigation and release-oriented Accords. Some Nerathi sensors find a moving channel easier to read, but any trained person may work the same compatible vessel. **Limit / counterplay:** Pollution, cold, dehydration, turbulence and bad water flow undermine performance; no magic exists without a prepared imprint.

**IQ / learning:** In pilot guilds, route estimation, layered map memory and rapid ferry arithmetic are cultivated skills, not a race-wide high IQ.

**EQ / cooperation:** Crew-based rescue agreements cultivate turn-taking and conflict checks; individual emotional intelligence varies normally.

**Everyday life:** Nine Reeds ferry systems, shared kitchens, waterline testimony, boat-family adoption and channel songs.

**Competing local testimony:** “Some call the river a home; inland Nerathi sometimes answer that a family can leave a river without leaving its people.” This is an original fictional perspective, not a documentary quotation.

### 3. Sylvari — The patient witnesses

**Status and origin:** post-Sundering named lineage. Sylvari households trace themselves through scattered woodland and marshward recovery settlements after the Sundering. A popular claim says the forests remade them to endure. Archaeologists have not proven the original cause and early records include families who did not live in forests. **What remains uncertain:** modern named lineage and early woodland settlement chains; biological birth mechanism and lifespan not proven.

**Representative face sketch:** `assets/peoples/sylvari.webp`. Frequently pointed or slightly elongated outer ears and delicate ear cartilage, but face shape and skin tone differ greatly; not all individuals have obvious ears or slender bodies. Portraits are illustrative single people, not a test of who belongs.

**Recorded history:** Glassworkers, orchard custodians, teachers, chapel servants, navigators and city builders developed diverse traditions. They are not a single forest kingdom.

**Body and advantage:** Some report finer dusk-acuity and outer-ear directional sound sensitivity; both are variable and can cause bright-light or crowded-noise discomfort. Longevity relative to humans remains unverified. When inherited sensory traits are present, can notice subtle dusk silhouettes and directional insect or water sounds; no universal plant conversation or immortality.

**Accord specialty:** **Growth-alignment craft.** Growth-Listening: botanical apprentices keep seasonal trace and vessel ledgers, helping align gentle restoration Accords to existing plant functions. Skill improves through long observation; a plant cannot be ordered to grow from nothing. **Limit / counterplay:** Plant health still needs soil, water, light and time; overworked vessels wear; dusk cues fail under fog or unfamiliar surroundings.

**IQ / learning:** Some academies emphasize careful longitudinal comparison and memory notebooks, not intrinsically greater intelligence.

**EQ / cooperation:** Garden mediation rituals teach listening to competing generations; empathy is social practice, never built into a pointed ear.

**Everyday life:** Managed groves, glasswork, gardening, chapel debates, moon observation and generations of urban migration.

**Competing local testimony:** “A woodland poem calls them keepers of trees; a port-side Sylvari family insists its oldest inheritance is a bread oven.” This is an original fictional perspective, not a documentary quotation.

### 4. Karrin — The quiet listeners

**Status and origin:** post-Sundering named lineage. Karstholds song-records and river archives tell of changed families surviving shattered rockworks after the Sundering. Some descendants could perceive vibrations through bone conduction. The association with caves is historical, not proof that all Karrin originated underground. **What remains uncertain:** approved Karrin sensory tendency; geographic and causal beginnings unverified.

**Representative face sketch:** `assets/peoples/karrin.webp`. Often unremarkable at a glance; individual Karrin can show small cheekbone or temple variations and strong ear anatomy, but there is no verified universal facial mark. Portraits are illustrative single people, not a test of who belongs.

**Recorded history:** Their households spread by marriage, adoption, trade and schooling into all Oravel polities, including Willowbank.

**Body and advantage:** In some individuals fine bone-conducted vibration sensitivity permits tactile recognition of rhythmic impacts through a stable surface. Can detect certain repeating structural rhythms or mechanical irregularities before a conventional listener, provided the surface transmits vibration. It is never mind-reading or lie detection.

**Accord specialty:** **Accord resonance checks.** Resonance-Checking: qualified examiners compare controlled vibrations in a prepared Accord vessel and detect a bad fit before release; others can learn instrument-based alternatives. **Limit / counterplay:** Crowded impacts, machinery noise or migraine can overwhelm perception; the person still needs calibration tools and may make false inferences.

**IQ / learning:** Careful structural diagnostics and acoustic mathematics are common trained crafts, not a claim of higher IQ.

**EQ / cooperation:** A silence-before-judgment custom helps some councils hear testimony accurately; it offers no supernatural access to feelings.

**Everyday life:** Echo Row instruments, rescue routes, public cistern work, bridge inspection and quiet-room rights.

**Competing local testimony:** “An inspector says a stone told her it was cracking; another corrects her: the stone vibrated, and she interpreted it.” This is an original fictional perspective, not a documentary quotation.

### 5. Cendri — The heat readers

**Status and origin:** post-Sundering named lineage. Cinder Isles and volcanic-port lineages identify families that developed or retained heat-related bodily adaptations around the Sundering and subsequent migrations. The myth that a dragon breathed life into every Cendri is devotional, not a proven descent record. **What remains uncertain:** approved thermal-adaptation folklore and port diaspora; original curse mechanism unverified.

**Representative face sketch:** `assets/peoples/cendri.webp`. Varied humanlike faces with occasional ash-like skin freckling, metallic flecks or patterned hair; these are family variations, not flame eyes or a compulsory glowing tattoo. Portraits are illustrative single people, not a test of who belongs.

**Recorded history:** Seafarers, ceramicists, physicians, lighthouse keepers and orchard families formed diasporas across Oravel. Some avoid hot landscapes entirely.

**Body and advantage:** Some individuals distinguish gradual thermal gradients more sensitively or tolerate certain temperature shifts with less discomfort. None is immune to smoke, burns, heat stroke or poor air. Fine temperature contrast detection and rapid recognition of a warming tool or vessel seam when the trait is present. No innate fire conjuring.

**Accord specialty:** **Heat-vessel tuning.** Thermal-Balancing: trained makers tune existing heat-holding or release traces in kiln, food-preservation and lamp Accords, using thermometry and protective equipment alongside perception. **Limit / counterplay:** A burning vessel still harms a Cendri; heat work consumes materials and wears containers; thermal comfort is not raw magical output.

**IQ / learning:** Schools prize kiln calculations and fault records, not an innate higher IQ or analytical birthright.

**EQ / cooperation:** Harbor crew calm-under-alarm drills can look like emotional steadiness; anxiety, courage and empathy remain individual.

**Everyday life:** Port markets, kilns, storm shelters, medical houses and carefully logged rescue lanterns.

**Competing local testimony:** “A patron claims the Cendri are made of ash; a Cendri physician replies that scars are injuries, not genealogies.” This is an original fictional perspective, not a documentary quotation.

### 6. Dhorren — The steadfast makers

**Status and origin:** post-Sundering named lineage. Dhorren genealogists preserve differing accounts of families adapted to demanding stoneworks, mountains and river locks after the Sundering. No reliable ancient race chart proves an exclusive rock-born ancestry or one universal dwarf kingdom. **What remains uncertain:** working Willowbank lineage and skilled house records; heritable mechanisms unsettled.

**Representative face sketch:** `assets/peoples/dhorren.webp`. Diverse heights, builds and facial hair. Some have compact proportions, broad hands and strong joints, but a clean-shaven tall Dhorren remains entirely plausible. Portraits are illustrative single people, not a test of who belongs.

**Recorded history:** Stonemasons, archivists, cooks, ferry pilots, couriers and urban smiths coexist; not all Dhorren are miners or short.

**Body and advantage:** Some lines show compact leverage and high proprioceptive balance under repetitive load, but individuals vary and injuries still accumulate. Precise body balance and fine contact-pressure control during bracing and tool placement when present; not superstrength or immunity to fatigue.

**Accord specialty:** **Accord vessel stewardship.** Anchor-Stewardship: skilled makers select and maintain durable stone and metal Accord housings. Their advantage is meticulous wear accounting plus possible tactile stability, not free earth magic. **Limit / counterplay:** Joint strain, compressed air, repetitive injury and structural cracks remain real; no vessel can support infinite force.

**IQ / learning:** Workshop geometry and materials budgets come from apprenticeship and accessible education, not a hereditary spatial-IQ bonus.

**EQ / cooperation:** Formal work-partner agreements and collective responsibility can encourage trust, but temperament and empathy differ among people.

**Everyday life:** Gatekeeping in the engineering sense, public locks, tool guilds, family carpentry and rescue masonry.

**Competing local testimony:** “A tourist calls Brann Dorrel a dwarf made for locks. His daughter answers that he was trained for them, and can still make mistakes.” This is an original fictional perspective, not a documentary quotation.

## Mixed / multiple identity and two non-census categories

### Mixed / Multiple Lineage — Kin across boundaries

**Classification:** identity and family category, not a separate race. Mixed-kin marriages, fostering, adoption and household alliances existed before and after the Sundering. The administrative Mixed / Multiple / Unreported column is a census convenience, not a seventh biological species.

**Appearance:** Any combination of ancestral facial characteristics or none visibly discernible. Fosterage and adoption may make family identity completely independent of outward traits.

**History:** Families self-identify, change census descriptions, keep multiple languages and maintain kin regardless of what is visibly inherited.

**Potential advantage and limits:** No universal hybrid stat buff. Individuals with any compatible sensory traits can use them, while social multilingual access may be an advantage when welcomed. Identity alone does not confer magic or immunity.

**Magic:** Accord learning depends on training and available materials; two ancestries do not automatically stack spell powers or eliminate cost.

**Learning, empathy and dignity:** Cultural code-switching may be practiced through family life, but no fixed IQ or EQ bonus applies. Some develop bridging skills, others face conflicting loyalties or prejudice; no automatic empathy advantage.

**Source status:** approved community fact; genetics, fertility, transmission and boundaries remain unresolved. No claim of guaranteed heredity, omniscience, permanent lifespan, immortality or godliness.

**Contested voice:** “Fenna Dalis should be allowed to name her own kin, not have strangers choose which half is more real.”

### True Dragons — The crowned wings

**Classification:** historical sapient sovereign lineage, status unresolved. Pre-Sundering dragon courts ruled humans and were sometimes worshipped as gods. One popular tradition says dragons were born of Vaen; this is a source tradition, not confirmed divine genealogy.

**Appearance:** Ancient reliefs depict scale, wings, horns and immense forms but artistic and political exaggeration prevents a single reliable facial reconstruction.

**History:** Veiled Centuries wars shattered dragon-led states. Surviving accounts say True Dragons cannot reproduce. Whether any now live, become human or return in a dragon form remains undetermined.

**Potential advantage and limits:** Known ancient political scale and formidable presence; precise inherited flight, flame or weather control cannot be verified from prayer inscriptions. Historical royal titles and worship do not establish divinity or moral superiority; reproduction and survival constraints still apply.

**Magic:** Dragon-court Remanence rites might have exploited appropriate imprints, but no modern scholar has authenticated an unlimited draconic Accord or deity-level control.

**Learning, empathy and dignity:** Courts employed records and stewards; no fixed dragon IQ scale can be deduced from their surviving inscriptions. Worshipful retellings portray love or tyranny depending on the teller; no race-level EQ verdict is possible.

**Source status:** ancient dragon rule established; true origin, live population and alleged returns unresolved. No claim of guaranteed heredity, omniscience, permanent lifespan, immortality or godliness.

**Contested voice:** “To a priest, a dragon was god. To a kitchen worker, a dragon was the sovereign who levied winter flour.”

### Speaking Changed Beings — The petition of the speaking

**Classification:** diverse sentient monsters, beasts or demons, not one race. Avarun traditions say some beasts, monsters and demons were born from the creators' grief; this is a popular explanation rather than cosmological proof. Some once-unreasoning beings are said to have gained consciousness after the Sundering.

**Appearance:** No standard face: body plans differ across many kinds of being and cannot be ranked by resemblance to human features.

**History:** Some petition for citizenship, others for treaty standing, and many remain animals or dangerous creatures without speech. None can be assessed solely by appearance.

**Potential advantage and limits:** A particular creature may have flight, smell, night sight or other natural advantages; no single power belongs to all. A voice or silence does not conclusively prove or disprove personhood. Predation and crimes still judged by actions and evidence.

**Magic:** Individual compatible imprints and learned Arts of Accord may be possible; not all conscious beings can or wish to practice magic.

**Learning, empathy and dignity:** Sapience must be considered individually; no automatic lower IQ for nonhuman bodies. Care, grief, negotiation and conflicting choices may be demonstrated through conduct; no human-style expression is mandatory.

**Source status:** some contemporary persons possess reason in changed forms; origin myths and uniform classification not proven. No claim of guaranteed heredity, omniscience, permanent lifespan, immortality or godliness.

**Contested voice:** “A silent petitioner sends a marked stone instead of speaking. The court must decide whether testimony needs a mouth.”

## Inheritance, ethics, testing, and civic life

1. **Heritable variation requires evidence.** Even in families where webs, thermal cues or unusual bone conduction recur, no number in the archives proves their Mendelian inheritance, average lifespan, fitness benefit, or frequency across the entire population. Adopted kin can be legal family without genetic resemblance.
2. **Specialty is not destiny.** A Karrin may prefer accounting, a Dhorren may teach dance, a Sylvari may be a wharf mechanic, a Cendri may not approach a kiln, a Nerathi may hate boats, and a human may be a world-class Accord examiner. Accessible guilds and equipment often outweigh a sensor trait.
3. **Vessel-based magic remains limited.** A skilled Nerathi may detect current changes earlier, but cannot command water without a suitable trace. A Karrin may sense an anchor's vibration but cannot hear lies. A Cendri might feel heat gradients but cannot endure fire. A Dhorren may find brace placement intuitive but is not indestructible. A Sylvari may notice dusk changes but cannot force forests to grow. The Five Laws still apply.
4. **Civic counting follows self-identification.** The Willowbank model uses only one self-reported primary category per counted person, with a voluntary mixed/multiple/unreported option; it must not infer racial identity from face sketches or use categories to deny rescue or magic training.
5. **Competing histories stay visibly competing.** Claims that all dragons were born of Vaen, humans exclusively of Ilyra's light, and monsters exclusively of divine sorrow are widespread tradition, not author-confirmed divine genealogy. Names Vaen and Ilyra are from a popular love story. Some Changed beings have personhood; not all monsters or beasts do.
6. **The other continents remain open.** This compendium covers named peoples recorded in Oravel and Willowbank, not a complete racial census of the five-continent world. Later continents can introduce new peoples, histories and unknown physical forms without contradiction.

## Automatic lore review: consistency, consequences and competing perspectives

**Why this fits:** Preserves the existing Avarun pre-Sundering human/dragon history, post-Sundering bodily alterations, unknown curse mechanics, incomplete evidence and five Remanence laws. The portrait gallery reflects the six named local lineages and a mixed identity, while making room for dragons and independently conscious Changed beings.

**Depth added:** Different kinds of sensory cues create specific jobs, disability accommodations, ecological needs and counterplay. Guild certifications, household marriage and migration prevent cultural stereotypes from turning into physical inevitabilities. The contested census hearing tests whether labels support public aid or become instruments of exclusion.

**Consequences:** Prioritize safe river routes for wet-footed boatworkers; quiet study spaces for sound-sensitive people; glare control for some dusk-sensitive readers; heat-safe workshops for Cendri; ergonomic tools for Dhorren workers; and multilingual schooling accessible to all. Political factions can exploit trait stories to control wages or claim natural rule.

**Improvements, in order:**
1. **Recommended strongest:** independently witnessed trait and magic tests with individual consent and environmental controls, documenting counterexamples rather than racial averages; would make the Powers Register credible.
2. Add a cross-continental migration and mixed-kinship archive, especially after 119 AS; would bridge the unexplored four continents without inventing their full histories.
3. Add an evolving personhood case file for a silent Speaking Changed petitioner; would force the Petition of the Speaking to confront its own reliance on speech.

## Family biology and reproductive variation — author-approved thematic extension

Avarun includes **men who may become pregnant**, both in naturally gestating families and through consent-based, costly magic. A minority of **Nerathi Tidecarrier** adult men may inherit a natural abdominal carrying-fold; many Nerathi men have no such capacity, and a person's face or water talent cannot establish it. The **Iveri**, a new minority people mentioned in overseas testimony, have another natural male gestational chamber variation, but no specific modern continent, reliable population or proof of ancient origin has been assigned to them. This **does not change the six common documented Oravel lineages or the Willowbank census categories**. A distinct, rare healing **Cradle Accord** may support a viable pregnancy in a consenting compatible adult man with a prepared nurturing Remanence imprint and trained care; it is not biologically automatic, race-exclusive, guaranteed, limitless or involuntary. Marriage is not restricted by sex or by reproductive capacity in every Oravel jurisdiction; polygamy and same-sex unions have different regional and religious legal status. For theology, privacy, medical cost, reproductive limits, and contrasting polities consult [The Many Cradles of Avarun](The_Many_Cradles_of_Avarun_APPROVED.md) and `data/families-and-cradles.json`. No settled divine attribution is asserted.
